“Gamefish including bass school to take advantage of unusual feeding opportunities,” says Hacker. “They group together and force large schools of baitfish such as threadfin or gizzard shad to the surface, where they feed on them.” Christian has seen bass, stripers, hybrids (wipers) and white bass in sprawling Pickwick Lake herd up massive numbers of shad, much like cowboys on horseback herd cattle into a corral. “They’ll swim beneath the school of bait and gradually force it to the surface. Once there, the shad can’t go anywhere but out of the water, so they panic and scatter in all directions. That’s when the feeding frenzy starts.”

Schooling bass fishing typically takes place in Hacker’s region in late spring and early fall. “Schooling activity is triggered by massive migrations of baitfish. In late spring, shad move in waves from the main lake to shallow tributaries to spawn. They travel the ends of primary points, over submerged humps and roadbeds, and along submerged creek and river channels. Gamefish anticipate this seasonal movement and station themselves in the same places.” But schooling behavior isn’t always a sure thing, Hacker says. “Some years, you don’t see much surface activity. An extremely cold winter leading to a big shad dieoff tends to adversely affect jump activity later in the year.”

When schooling activity is in full swing, you can never be certain what you’re going to catch, Hacker knows. “On lakes like Pickwick where a variety of gamefish occur, you’ll often find more than one species preying on the same school of baitfish. (NOTE: Hacker proved this to me in spades recently when we boated big smallmouth, largemouth and stripers, all surfacing on the same school of threadfin shad.) That’s part of what makes jump fishing so darn much fun — on some lakes, you never know exactly what you’re going to catch.“

You may also catch all sizes of gamefish from the same school when they’re in the jumps, Hacker has found. “I’ve caught 1-pound smallmouth, 4-pound largemouth and 40-pound stripers from the same school. That’s why you need to keep your reel’s drag adjusted – you’ll be reeling in keepers, then all of a sudden a monster loads on!”

Tennessee bass expert Jack Christian guided for decades on Priest and Old Hickory reservoirs near Nashville. Now retired, he offers sage advice for would-be schooling bass busters. “You need to arrives at the lake before daylight so you’re in a likely ‘school zone’ at first light,” he stressed. “I recommend starting at the entrance to a major tributary — the primary points on either side of the creek mouth are great ambush positions for gamefish. Shad entering or exiting the tributary have to pass by this spot sooner or later.” The guide advises parking at the tributary mouth and waiting for fish to start breaking. “Look for signs of surfacing fish and/or birds circling and diving — a good sign of crippled baitfish on the surface (and recent jump activity). If there’s no surface action after a few minutes, idle into the creek arm while watching both the surface and your graph. If you spot a bunch of bait balled up a few feet under the surface, shut off your outboard and get ready, ‘cause it’s a safe bet they’ll be driven to the surface quickly by hungry gamefish.”

If you’re still unsure where schooling activity will take place, simply cruise the lake, Christian recommends. “This tactic works especially well during the fall jump season, when gamefish are more likely to be surfacing in open water unrelated to structure. Just put your boat on plane and cruise around until you spot breaking fish.”

It’s not easy to keep your cool when an acre or more of big fish are surfacing in a feeding frenzy just up ahead, Christian says. “There’s nothing that gets your heart pounding faster than the sight and sound of a huge school of breaking bass or stripers. I’ve seen so many fish in the jumps, they stretched clear across the mouth of a creek arm. When faced with a fishing opportunity this mind-boggling, it’s no wonder so many anglers get flustered and blow their chances.”

Christian advises approaching surfacing fish with extreme caution. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on a big school of surfacing bass, only to have another boat come roaring up too close to the action. This spooks the heck out of the fish! The driver will usually shut off his engine and started casting, then asked me where all the bass went.” Once Jack spots schoolies, he shuts off his big motor at least 50 yards from the school, approaches to within 25 yards with his trolling motor on high, then creeps within casting range on low thrust. “Keep your trolling motor on constant ‘on’ and avoid stopping and starting the motor. Intermittent trolling motor noise spooks schooling fish much worse than constant noise.”

The veteran angler finds stripers to be the spookiest of all schoolers. “I’ve seen them scatter if I so much as dropped a pair of clippers on my boat’s deck. When stripers start busting bait on top, remain calm, keep your distance, make long casts with heavy lures, and if possible, wind-drift within casting range rather than use your trolling motor.”
