1.虫

If you’re throwing lures for bass, you might be confused as to why you should be looking at the bugs on or near the water. “This isn’t fly fishing," you might even say. While you might not be slinging bug patterns with the long stick (though you totally should), the fish you’re going after are always going to be looking for the meals that are easiest, and that includes bugs. Not all fish are going after giant baitfish, you’d be surprise how many big caught I’ve on tiny little bug imitations.
There was one trip that always stands out when it comes to matching my presentation to what bugs were present. When I was fishing out in Nebraska a few years ago, we pulled up to the lake and noticed nearly the entire surface of the lake was littered with these bright blue dragonflies. We didn’t see a single blow up or any fish actually eating the dragonflies, but we figured they’d be looking up with all that activity and just might be keyed in on blue. I tied on the only blue thing I had in my tackle box, an unweighted tube jig and held my rod tip high enough on the retrieve to keep it on the surface. That was one of the most successful days of my entire life, and even after spending the whole day on the water, we never saw a fish eat a dragonfly. Just because they’re not eating the bugs you see doesn’t mean that’s not a clue as to what you should tie on.

Many anglers check the weather the first second they wake up for a day of fishing. That’s good, I do the same thing. But anglers forget that weather is not a singular occurence, but a pattern that will roll out over the course of a few days. It doesn’t matter if Saturday is going to be blazing hot all day if the past four days were freezing cold. Those bass are going to be hungry and will start feeding heavily, but not until the sun has a chance to warm up the water. Instead of throwing topwater and power fishing like you would on a hot summer day, start off the cool morning with colder weather techniques and then gradually switch to more aggressive tactics as the water warms.
Paying attention to your fish finder and checking the water temperatures constantly will help you hook up more consistently. I was fishing earlier this spring and everywhere I want I was forced to fish a curly tail grip on a drop shot rig crazy slow, as all the water temps I was seeing were close to the 50 degree mark. Until I found a cove that was receiving constant sun and I noticed the temps were a whole five degrees warmer. I tied on a jerkbait right away and started twitching it more aggressivley through the likely spots in the cove. Sure enough I started hooking up more than I had been the entire day. It also meant I could fish much faster, thankfully.

While many anglers check or at least consider the amount of sunlight on a particular day, like whether there is bluebird skies or dark and overcast, many forget to think about the angle of the sun. Fishing the flats teaches you that you can see fish and structure much better when the sun is at your back. It also teaches you just how skittish fish are of shadows and how to position your shadow to stop scaring fish away.
You can still have you back to the sun if it’s going to catch you more fish, but just be aware of what your shadow is doing. Overcast days tend to throw less shadows, but you’d be surprised how even a subtle shadow will make a fish refuse to bite. I always try to look for fish and cast beyond the reach of my shadow, at least another ten or 15 feet beyond the shadow, to make sure that I won’t spook any fish. Also make sure that your kayak’s shadow isn’t throwing off a piece of structure without you realizing it. Many times I’ve been focused on my shadow while casting directly in front of me, without realizing my kayak’s shadow was laying over the structure I planned to cast to next, making it much tougher to hook up.

Whether you’re fishing a new fishery or your old one, taking a look at the bank before you push off from dry land can tip you off to what is in the water. On my local smallmouth bass ponds I know when the crawfish have started to come out because the banks are always littered with crawfish shells from racoons foraging every night. That not only tells me to tie on a crawfish imitation, but also the size and color that is currently in the water. Then it’s just a matter of checking the water temps to figure out the right retrieve speed.
When I was fishing Arkansas’ Buffalo National River a while back I had no idea what was in the water. I knew that there would be smallmouth bass, because the guide told us that, but other than that I had no clue. As we were getting the kayaks ready beside the gin clear, shallow river, I noticed the skulls of a few gar littering the bank. That tipped me off to know there would be some slower, deeper and warmer sections of river along the stretch we would be fishing, which would not only give me a shot at a gar, but also possibly a few largemouth bass. I ended up catching a bunch of smallmouth in the faster water and riffles and even picked up a few largemouth bass when the water dropped off into deeper pools. I saw a bunch of gar too, but they absolutely refused to bite. That’s fishing.
